Artists from around the US, and even a few from far-flung corners of the earth have donated artwork to assist wildlife organizations on the Gulf Coast as they clean up animals in the wake of the BP oil spill disaster.
The first of three auctions will occur on October 14th, 6-9pm at Gallery 11, 101 S Baylen st. in Pensacola Florida. All proceeds will benefit Emerald Coastkeepers.
One of the most impressive items up for auction is this handmade Turtle Quilt, created and donated by Baltimore Maryland city kids as part of a service learning project. The project was the result of the serendipitous association of Ceilon Aspensen and Lisa Black, art teachers for the 2010 Camp Achieve summer program, and Brenda Wade, Executive Director of Achievement Services, the non-profit organization which operates Camp Achieve. “The kids loved the idea of doing something that would help the poor animals injured and displaced by the oil spill. They really wanted to help,” Aspensen said.
The second auction will be held at the Chimney’s Restaurant in Gulfport, Mississippi on Sunday, October 17 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Nature Preservation Society (WRANPS), a nonprofit organization located in Long Beach, Mississippi dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of orphaned, sick, and injured wildlife.
The third auction will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Wednesday, October 20 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Proceeds from this auction will also benefit WRANPS.
